The new age of UK comics is dawning and a light is being shone amongst the mass of creators who are putting ink to paper and creating pieces of artwork. The need for professional cost effective printing is one that has been at the forefront of the UK scene for a long time.

Self publishing is an art form in itself and handling all the aspects of production is something that can give even hardened comic creators a headache. Getting printing costs down has been something that all starting out creators need, to ensure they can print their books, sell them and be able to keep this process going, perhaps even make a small profit in the process. 

The UK comic scene is thriving, so why not come out of the shadows of its US counterpart and establish itself as its own entity. What better way in doing this by having its own look and feel.

In working through the options a slight change in size would not only provide that holy grail of affordable printing, but provide a platform that, if embraced, would give the UK scene the format to start building a standard look and feel that would let people see where the comics come from, stating they are UK comics.

Warpton Comics has always strived to support the UK scene in what ever way it could. Now, in partnership with Smallzone, it is looking not only to pass on cost effective printing but look at creating a new age of UK comics.

Perhaps in the process bringing an end to the argument of independent versus small press.

If you have needs for books that fall outside of the above please get in touch with Smallzone as all requests can be catered for although this format will be the best value for money. Higher runs will - of course - be cheaper per copy.

Terms and Conditions

  • There is no initial set up charge for your order, just complete the order form, and we'll invoice you once the job is complete.
  • At this stage the format is 28 interior pages plus cover to be able to provide such low costs. Any projects that fall outside of this please email comicsprinting@smallzone-comics-shop.com for a quote.
  • Pages should be submitted in EPS – JPEG - TIFF or high res print ready PDF format at least 300dpi.
  • It is recommended for colour covers to be at least 600dpi.
  • Ideally the pages should be submitted on CD. If you wish to email them please state this on your order form and arrangements can be made. Although no responsibility can be taken for loss or damage to files if emailed.
  • Please include on all pages a 5mm or 10mm border for bleed and crop marks.
  • Delivery is included in the above prices and these costs will also be included in quotes for 1 UK address.
  • At this stage this offer is exclusive to Smallzone, so please use it and help us help you.
  • On sending in your completed order form, you will receive a confirmation email from Smallzone.
  • Orders can be placed well in advance of artwork being complete. This will help us to schedule printing and be aware of jobs to process. Please state when you think we will be receiving the artwork on the order form.
  • There is a typical 2 week turnaround period for all books on receipt of artwork.
  • If any delays are foreseen the customer will be contacted straight away.
  • If any circumstances change – shipping address etc please advise Smallzone straight away. We will look to accommodate all changes when we can.
  • Once the book has gone to print there can be no cancellation.
  • Once the book has been printed an invoice will be sent to the creator. This can be paid via cheque, bank transfer or paypal (if paypal please add on 3.4% for handling charges).
  • Each order will receive a PDF proof to check for look, spelling, layout etc. This must be checked and an email sent back with either; 1) amends clearly marked or detailed, or 2) with approval to go ahead. Without this email the order will not go to print. Please do ask if you want to see a printed proof.
  • All changes must be made by the creator and the page(s) resent. If there are major changes needed. If there are a number of pages there may be an additional charge for time, but we will do our utmost to not put any additional charges in place.
  • We will endeavour to accommodate changing circumstances and be as flexible as we can.
  • By supplying the book for print you are providing all trademark and copyright clearances and no parties involved in the printing are responsible or liable for any actions taken as a result of improper use of characters or materials.
  • Payment for the completed job is required 30 days after the job has been delivered. Please look to honour this as it will allow us to continue to provide this service smoothly and effectively.
  • Final Payment should be made to Warpton either via a cheque or via paypal using the email provided in your paperwork. (if paying via pay pal, there is a 3% processing fee, please add this to your final payment).

 The Size

Standard US comics Size is 6.625" x 10.25" OR 168 mm by 260 mm

The new UK format is 160 mm x 245mm OR 6.20" by 9.60"

Getting a Quote

When requesting a quote, please remember to include the following important specifications:

  • Your initial print run, and whether you require a run on price

  • Your total page count including the covers. (This will always be a multiple of 4)

  • Your chosen format, eg: A4 portrait

  • Binding option: Do you want your comic stapled or perfect bound?

  • Colour options: Do you require any full colour pages?

  • Paper: Do you want glossy or matt finnish, or perhaps coloured paper? What weight paper do you want to use? 80gsm - to card stock is available.

  • Source Material: Will you be sending a disk with Jpegs, or a Mock up copy to scan from?

  • And finally, always remember to include your address and delivery requirments. Do you need your comics delivered to more than 1 address? Are these addresses all UK?

Folding, stitching or binding are included in all prices.

We will always try to include your delivery price in any quote too, however, this sometimes has to be worked out upon delivery, and invoiced then.

Two things to always remember: The higher your initial print run, the lower you can price your comic, and whatever you price your comic at, you'll need to take into account both printing and distribution costs.
