Sylvia Mark, a thirteen year-old girl who feels separated from her peers. What Sylvia doesn't know is that she's just one of one hundred girls bred as part of a genetics experiment that sought to give normal humans extraordinary powers. Thirteen years ago, four girls were kidnapped and sent to families around the country to be raised and Silvia is determined to find out why...

TITLE: A-MEN

Creator: Shakey Kane, Pages: 40, Format: US Colour Cover

Shakey Kane's A- Men is a psycadelic Kirby meets Kev O'Neil style comic with a collection of short stories, that have a touch of Judge Dredd cynicism. The title is a clever play on words as you will discover when you read this comic, and the interior stories are full of subtle and not so subtle jokes that have a wonderful dark edge.

Very surreal and not like any other comics your likely to come across.

TITLE: ANXIOUS SOMETHING

Creator: Chris Stonehill, Pages: 28

A collection of dream like images that conjure a loose narrative without any text, that allows the 'reader' to interpret the book how they want to. Chris has created some lovely textures with ink in this book, and I look forward to more publications.

At first, someone not used to Malcy's unique way of looking at things, may be mistaken into thinking this comic is simply a study of the title. As various characters fall victim to the dreaded banana peel.

However, halfway through the book we are reminded why Malcy is one of the most powerful and original cartoonists of our time.

TITLE: BRIN

Publisher: Tim Brown, Pages: 28, Format: A5 B/W

Brin the Elf has appeared before in two other titles from Tim. The last title - Talamander - was a huge critical success with it's breathtaking, realistic artwork. However this series, Tim has chosen to return  to a much more cartoony style, which he personally enjoys. And his love of this approach shows too.  All the usual humour is present and the faster drawing from Tim promises a quicker publication of future issues. Long time Brin fans will love this, and it's a great jumping on point for new readers too.

TITLE: CONFESSIONAL

Publisher: Warpton Comics, Pages: 44

Format: US Full Colour

Written by Chris McCay and drawn and coloured by Lee O'Connor, this tale of a priest who hears the confession of the devil, is compelling and a treat for the eyes.

Comparisons will be made to Neil Gaiman's work, and to the Sandman Spin off title "Lucifer", but this story's Satan is a different devil to the Vertigo titles character. Once again Warpton Comics have produced a quality title with top production values.

TITLE: COSMOGENESIS

Publisher: Clown Press, Pages: 60

There really isn't room to do this epic story justice in this little space. All I can say is this is sci-fi fantasy at it's very best.

Smallzone is proud to to finally be able to bring you all five Cosmogenesis books.

Adam Grose and Tony Sulri have crafted a wonderful story that will keep you engaged in this perfectly realised universe until the very last page. I really can't recommend this title enough.

TITLE: DOCTOR SPONGE

Creator: Chris Askham, Pages: 20, Format: A5 B/W

A small press veteran, Chris Askham is an accomplished artist and writer. His latest title is a strange tale about an evangelical soldier and a homicidal doctor. The first few pages contain very little dialogue and really show the reader Chris's storytelling flair. The second issue promises to link the two characters, and hopefully shed a little more light on what the hell's going on. Also, with the first issue: A free copy of Chris's last comic "Ally And The Big Man" which I cannot recommend enough.

TITLE: DOG HENDRIX

Creator: Bob Dickinson, Pages: 40 - 48, Format: A5 B/W

Hendrix lives with a suburban family in 1970's Britain. Hendrix is a dog. But he's also the re incarnation of an ancient religious leader who was murdered for his beliefs. And this comic would make a fantastic TV series!

It has an incredibly realistic script with sharp dialogue that has been written by a creator who has obviously taken the time to listen to how people really speak. The two elements of slice of life and surreal fantasy are merged together masterfully by Bob and drawn in a bold original style born from experimentation by the artist.

TITLE: GREEN PLANET

Creator: Stanko Beslic, Pages: 36

Format: US Colour Cover

This is a wonderful fantasy piece that would have been a great children's fable, if not for all the sex and violence portrayed. As it is, it's a very well realised piece of adult fantasy, with compelling characters, and a strong female lead. Although translated into English from Cheqe (I think) the subtext still manages to come through, although reading in the original tongue would, I'm sure, be much more rewarding. The artwork has a classical look to it, with intricate detail and a good grasp of anatomy that enhances the storytelling rather than diverting from it.

There an obvious influence here from Dave Simm. But to be influenced by such a great comics creator can hardly be a bad thing. ( No pun intended ).

This is modern fantasy at it's best. Carefully treading the line between drama and paraody with an artistic confidence not often seen. TITLE: ICE GAME ILIAD

Publisher: Ricky Douglas, Pages: 44, Format: A5 B/W

The story of Diomedes and the Gods is one of those tales in the Iliad which tends to be edited out of any summary of the story. This is understandable, as the events portrayed here play little part in the narrative of the Iliad as a whole.

Diomedes might be brave, resourceful, determined, and strong, but like others he is strictly second rate compared with Achilles himself. He has to be. Achilles is practically indestructible. Diomedes is not. In it's way though, it is these weaknesses which make the story of Diomedes a good read in it's own right, and perhaps important for this adaptation, the entire thing is generally self contained.

TITLE: KAZANA & THE LEGION OF KHAOS

Ed must be one of the hardest working artists in the small press today. He keeps churning out these large scale, and now full colour, stories on a regular basis. On a similar scale his creative partner Chris, seems to be a bottomless well of ideas and stories.

This latest sword and sorcery offering from the Anglo-Irish pairing is an obvious labour of love, with full colour painted artwork, and glorious glossy printing.
